Portrait sketches of random people. Some drawings are studies from master artists like Nicolai Fechin, Anders Zorn, Anthonis van Dyck, Diego Velázquez and John Singer Sargent (who happen to be my favourite portrait artists). Mostly graphite on newsprint paper, sometimes charcoal or carbothello pencils on toned paper.

Color and Value Studies 2015

That year I tried to improve my skills in digital painting by focusing on hue - value - color, lighting, shadows and hard vs. soft edges. I also studied some paintings and illustrations from masters and film stills (‘Badlands’, Carl Spitzweg, Frank Schoonover, N.C. Wyeth, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant). Also a study on the various times of the day and resulting effects of light and color. Tools: Photoshop CC & Wacom Cintiq 22HD

Character Sketches 2013-2015

4 out of 40 character drawings from one of my very early freelance projects. I was super excited that I got this job and I think my enthusiasm shows in the characters’ facial expressions. Looking at them now I’m just as thrilled as when I did them. Graphite pencil on paper, later cleaned-up and colored in Photoshop CS2, Wacom Intous A5.

Getting into digital painting 2013-2014

In 2013 and 2014 I got serious about digital painting and sketching. I tried to sketch more freely and experimented with different brushes until I decided to stick with the basic round hard edge. Tools: Photoshop CS2 & Wacom Intous A5.

Getting into Gesture Drawing and Anatomy 2012-2013

While being an external student at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna I attended almost every life drawing class offered, and really got into gesture drawing and constructive anatomy. The following sketches, however, were done outside my university classes.
